Did Green Juice give us the lift we needed? 

Yes. After drinking Green Juice before my night shift, I felt more energized and motivated to go the extra mile for my patients and colleagues.

I was in a more positive headspace and didn’t experience that awful ‘hit-the-wall’ moment I was so used to feeling between 2-6am.

2. Weight Gain and Bloating

Lucky I wear stretchy scrubs because I have unfortunately felt this one first hand! If my meal planning doesn’t quite work out, I find I’m drawn to sugary comfort foods all night because I’m lethargic and easily distracted when I’m tired. Who isn’t, right?

Painful bloating and unwanted weight gain is generally the result occurring too soon after my break. We have received numerous emails and comments about weight gain and bloating while on night shift so I know this is a sore point!

So, did we lose any pounds using Green Juice?

No. But it did make us seriously consider what we were putting into our mouths to make better food choices? Yes!

Even though we didn’t directly lose any weight, we didn’t gain any either. It’s funny, once you start investing in your own health it changes the way you think about night shift meal planning, and your overall night shift diet. 

In saying that, a man stated he lost 40 pounds while drinking Green Juice! Maybe it’s to do with the special Ashwagandha ingredient I mentioned earlier? It lowers the stress hormone cortisol responsible for weight gain. Emotional eater much?

What about the flavor of green juice?  

One of my favorite things is the taste of Green Juice. Yes, it’s no milkshake or glass of vino, but for a health drink, it tastes good!

I would describe the taste as ‘minty.’ 

I remember saying to Dan after my first sip, “finally a green juice which doesn’t taste like grass!” It mixes pretty well too and it’s best had with ice cold water.

The coconut water component may also provide subtle flavor changes, but truthfully, I couldn’t taste it much. I think it has a bigger role in transporting nutrients throughout the blood, supplying the body with potassium and lowering blood pressure.

Many other brands overcompensate for the harsh grass flavor, (potentially as a result of the wheatgrass?) by adding a bucket load of sugar or giving up totally and not adding anything at all. Both are foul, to say the least.

3. Poor Sleep

We have been pretty lucky with the amount of sleep we get on night shift because we make sure we stick to a routine (as much as possible).

But I am very sympathetic to those who have a hard time getting solid zzz’s. It is very frustrating!

To be honest, I didn’t notice much of a difference in regards to sleep after drinking Green Juice.  However in saying that, I did sleep well and felt relaxed while winding down for bed, which I guess is the desired feeling before a snooze?

4. Stress as a Result of Poor Sleep, Limited Social Interactions and Time With Family Etc…

I work a pretty stressful job as a nurse in a busy Emergency Department. Constant, critical decision making in time-pressured situations can really take its toll.

There is so much “stuff” I leave at the door, by choice, because firstly the situation is too confronting to repeat outside the hospital doors and secondly, I simply need a break if I want to sleep.

Even though I have these processes in place, it can still be really stressful and tough to sleep sometimes. That’s before dealing with life outside the hospital doors…

The number of times I witnessed my friends point to various new blemishes on their face and say, “LOOK! Damn night shift again!” is insane.

  1. I love all of your advice! I had a question, you said you drink the green juice before your night shift, do you drink it during as well? If so how much?

      Thanks for your comment. To answer your question, no I personally don’t drink green juice overnight but I can’t see a reason why you shouldn’t. Our bodies are generally pretty dehydrated and would probably welcome water and green juice overnight. If you are interested in green juice, I found a new recommendation that I like a lot more than Organifi and it’s called SuperGreen TONIK. I did a full review here which I encourage you to check out. I know these kinds of products are not cheap so I wanted to make sure you are getting maximum bang for your buck. Hope this helps. Emma
